RNLI needs Volunteers both sides of the border!!

Sometimes being a TV reporter is really good fun. Today I went to Silloth RNLI to do a piece about the recruitment drive for new volunteers at Silloth, Workington, St Bees, Kippford and Kirkcudbright. You need to be between 17 and 55 if you want to become part of a lifeboat crew and you need to live within a few miles of your local station. You don’t need any experience as all the training is provided, including 5 days at Poole in Dorset. The guys I met at Silloth were a fantastic bunch and when they say it’s like having a second family I believe them. I was lucky enough to get to go out on the lifeboat with them for a tour around the Solway which was brilliant fun – and then they even let me drive the lifeboat, though that was a bit more scary. You can see a clip of my not so elegant clamber onboard if you click on the picture – shot by lovely ITV Border cameraman Steve Little – it’s his voice you can hear! And watch out for the full report on Lookaround, ITV1 Border, Tuesday 24th May at 6 o’ clock.
